Prophecy

To be David’s Son and a King

Prophecy: The Messiah would be from the Tribe of Judah, to be David’s Son and a King

God's Promise to the Tribe of Judah
The Messiah is to come from the tribe of Judah, be the son of David, and be greater than David. David’s kingdom is connected to the future Messianic kingdom to fulfill this eternal promise. As it was written in the Tanakh (NIV & TLV),

Genesis 49:10The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.”

God's Promise to David's Throne

King David of Israel was a man after God’s own heart. Before his death, God spoke to David:

2 Samuel 7:16 “”your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.

Food for thought:

  • Why did the Scriptures always say “David’s throne” and never say “Solomon’s throne?”
  • Why didn’t Solomon’s throne last forever?

To Solomon, it appeared that he was promised a throne that would be established forever. It was shown later that Solomon did not meet God’s conditions (1 Kings 11:9–13); hence, Solomon’s throne was not forever.

  • How did God make David’s kingdom “established” forever?  See below.

How did Messiah Jesus Fulfill the Prophecy?

As it was written in the New Covenant (NIV & TLV),

Matthew 2:6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

The Lineage of David

Jewish people have been waiting for the coming of the Messiah, and from the Tanakh, they know that the Messiah was from the tribe of Judah, the lineage of David. Therefore, it was important that the genealogical scrolls be carefully recorded and stored (such as. Eraz chapter 2, 1 Chronicles chapter 1–9:44) so that everyone knew those who were descendants of David in the past.

David's kingdom was "established" by Jesus.

Jesus was born to Joseph, a descendant of David (Matthew 1:1–17). Some scholars believe that the Jewish genealogical records were stored in the Temple. Since Jesus was born before the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE, no one has accused Jesus of not being a descendant of Judah before 70 CE.

Matthew 1:1 “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:”

David’s kingdom was “established” by the Jewish Messiah Jesus in the first century. David’s throne was “established” when God raised “up Jesus to sit on His throne” and exalted Him “to the right hand of God” (Acts 2:29–36).
