The Messiah Performed Miracles

Prophecy: The Messiah Performed Miracles

As it was written in the Tanakh (NIV & TLV),

Isaiah 35:5-65 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.”
Miracles

The Messiah would perform miraculous works of healing and deliverance.

How did the Messiah Jesus fulfill this prophecy?

Jesus Performed Miracles by His Own Authority and Power

Jesus used no magical tools, spells, or incantations in His miracles. Whereas the prophets and Moses in the Tanakh relied on God’s power to perform miracles and not their own, Jesus performed miracles by His own power. In the New Covenant, Jesus performed miracles by His Words, which carried authority; His Word is the authority and the power.

As it was written in the New Covenant (NIV & TLV), Jesus gave the following answer when John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask if Jesus was really the Messiah.

Matthew 11:4-64Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

In Matthew 11:4-6, Jesus instructs the messengers to go and tell John what they have witnessed. Jesus references the passage in Isaiah about the coming Messiah (Isaiah 35:5–6). This is Jesus’ evidence to John that He truly is the One who was to come.

A blind beggar receives his sight:

Luke 18:35-43

35  As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36  When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37  They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

38  He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39  T hose who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40  Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41  “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42  Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” 43  Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.”

Jesus forgives and heals a paralyzed man:
Matthew 9:1-8 1 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” 3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!” 4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.”
Jesus heals a man with leprosy:
Matthew 8:1-3

1 When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him.2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.”

Jesus heals a deaf and mute man:
Mark 7:31-37

31  Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32  There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.

33  After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34  He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35  At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

36  Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37  People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.””

Jesus raises a widow's son:

Luke 7:11-15

11  Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12  As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13  When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

14  Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15  The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.”

Jesus restores a demon-possessed man:
Luke 8:26-37

26  They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. 27  When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28  When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29  For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

30  Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31  And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

32  A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33  When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

34  When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35  and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36  Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37  Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.”

Jesus calms the storm:
Matthew 8:23-27

23  Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24  Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25  The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26  He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

27  The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
